Okay... now I understand.
This story reminds me of a similar tale in the late M Scott Peck's book, The Road Less Traveled. If you have a copy, it's in the section on... grace.

A description is available, along with a view of an excerpt at Amazon.com. To elaborate on the excerpt in question, I would have to find the book, which is in boxes in other books, waiting to be shelved in the townhouse I bought two months ago. Will get back to you on this though.
