For all your "Saint Nicholas Day" needs...

...go to the boys named Nicholas at Traditio in Radice. I first heard the "prison story" years ago from an Old Calendar Russian Orthodox priest. A real Catholic does not hesitate to tell his or her children: "Yes, there is a Santa Claus." This will help them take it from there.

Followed, of course, by, "and he's not some fat-ass coca-cola addicted elf from the North Pole!"

GFvonB: Sounds exactly like something I'd tell my own kids. You gotta admit, by introducing them to the idea of a real live saint, as opposed to some imaginary character, the way is better paved for when they learn that there is no said imaginary character who maxes out credit cards to leave presents under the tree. Their innocence is maintained a bit longer.

Hopefully into adulthood, if only to believe in the place where saints may dwell.
