Should Auld Acquaintance Be Forgot: 2025

In case you haven't noticed, I haven't written much lately. It doesn't mean nothing's happened. Quite the opposite, in fact -- plus, a bit more to explain.

Early this year, we had a contractor come to the house. We've lived in this house for twenty years now. Celia's been on my case to renovate the kitchen. She was right, or course, but it was a matter of money (didn't know how to arrange for it), and time (not as much before retirement as after). But the toilet was leaking from the ceiling, so it couldn't wait. Well, one thing led to another, and we ended up doing the entire house.

Arlington Village Townhouses were built just south of Columbia Pike, in Arlington, Virginia, between 1938 and 1941, as colonial-style rental units to accommodate the anticipated workforce of the war production, what with the Pentagon being constructed just two miles to the east. In the early 1980s, they were heavily renovated, and converted from rental units to condominiums. In so doing, they might have cut a few corners. Our contractor was familiar with them given his experience elsewhere in the neighborhood, and we found them personally soon enough.

This is a great place to live. We are within walking distance of almost everything we need, including the bus stop for when I used to go to work, and my favorite Irish pub on the corner. It is also very close to a designated (whatever that means) nature preserve.

We moved back into our good-as-new house, and all is well, at least until we finish moving in the furniture, and decide what to get rid of (with a one-bedroom-with-den unit covering 840 square feet).

But that's not the point of all this, not exactly.

If you look at "My Back Pages" here, you will note that over the last ten years, my entries have reduced with each year, with this year being the lowest. Life is what happens when you don't have time to write about it. But between retirement, and finishing the renovation, among other things, that should change.

This year was also one that signaled transitions. I will be doing less parish work than previously, which is a story in itself. I will be playing more music than in the last few years, which is yet another story. I wrote only one significant piece this year outside the usual faith-and-culture-schtick. I want to do many more than that next year, when I will elaborate on the significant events of recent years, which I never took the time to relate in this venue. I will also be commenting more on current events. With any luck, someone will be listening.

I won't be doing any podcasts. I don't see the attraction. Most of them are the playground of poseurs who take too long to get to the point. I'd rather read it than listen (and try to stay awake) to it.

And I won't be moving to Substack -- yet.

As the saying goes, stay tuned.
