From 1909 to 1912, photographer Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii (1863-1944) took numerous color photographs of life in Central Russia, using a unique multi-plate method. The original plates were obtained by the Library of Congress, and a selection of them are viewed in Boston.com. Looking at these scenes, one must remember that both World War I and the Russian Revolution had yet to occur.
