On this date in 1912, the Girl Guides of America, later incorporated as the Girl Scouts of the USA, was founded. And who better than Wikipedia to tell the tale:

While in the UK, [Juliette Gordon "Daisy" Low] worked as a Girl Guide leader for troops she organized in Scotland and London. On returning to America in 1912, Juliette placed her historic telephone call to her cousin, Nina Pape: "Come right over! I've got something for the girls of Savannah, and all of America, and all the world, and we're going to start it tonight!" I buy Girl Scout cookies every year. It's just about the only thing they do better than the Boy Scouts, whose best-known annual fund-raising device is popcorn. If you're a Scoutmaster, there's no middle ground; you either love it or you hate it. I've got the same can I bought five years ago. Fortunately, I'm not stockpiling it in my garage. (Oh yes. It can happen.)
